Whoops!

Thanks to our handi-van ride, riding some long days, some bad estimation on our part, and the realization that the underground railroad maps we have been following are based on historic symbols not geography... We are going to reach the post office a few days earlier than anticipated. We will be probably be there on Monday so if you haven't mailed anything yet please wait. And if you have mailed something please let us know so we can have things forwarded if we arrive before them. Sorry!

10/13 Day 81: Winchester, ID to Pomeroy, WA 74 miles (4086 miles)             The sun once again refused to rise today, and it promised to be another gray day of riding, but one that would at least offer us a nice long descent to start our day. We packed things up quickly and got out of the park in short order so that we could make our way to the gas station just a half mile or so away. We had some coffee and ate granola at the only table in the store, which was right in the middle of the place, so we had our hobo picnic right in everyone's way. Once we'd eaten our fill and were ready to go back out into the chilly morning, we cleaned everything up, threw on some warm clothes, and made our way out of town. The road out of Winchester was in pretty poor repair, covered in potholes and cracks, and made for some rough riding at first. Days 20-23: EmanciPAtion and Into Ohio

8/11 Day 20: Ohiopyle, PA to Cedar Creek Park Free Campground, Somewheresville, PA 40 miles (875 miles) The four of us pose in front of a bend in the Youghagheny River, just off the rail trail.         We didn't have to be out of our cabin today 'til 10AM, so we decided to take full advantage and sleep up until 9:30. We ate light breakfast and hauled our bikes back down the torturous gravel trail we had come up the night before. It wasn't until 11 that we reached the rail trail, since we had taken our time getting everything together. The trail, we learned, stretches all the way from Pittsburgh to D.C. and was already teeming with short run tourists, families on day rides, joggers, dog-walkers, and anyone looking to get a quick walk or ride in during their day. SPOT Us!

Almost one week to go til departure and Erin and I are about to head back to Boston from the beach and dismantle our lives. In other news, I just acquired a Spot device, thanks to my wonderful parents. With this gadget I'll be able to send check-in messages to the world and, more relevantly, to a shared page that will link to the blog. On that shared page you'll be able to view the location of our check-ins for the last seven days. The only location point on the map right now is in North Carolina, where I'm at the beach with my family, but it should give you guys an idea of the map's functionality. The device is named Argus, after Hera's trusted watchman who had a hundred eyes. When Argus slept, only half his eyes would close, so he was always on guard.
